Environmentally Friendly Print
Melbourne Business School and Mt Eliza Executive Education is supportive of all initiatives that help reduce the impact that some aspects of printing have on the environment.
The key environmental issues our accredited suppliers are addressing in the print industry include:
- the discharge of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) into the atmosphere from solvent use
- the proper disposal of solvent waste
- the management of dangerous goods
- the discharge of pollutants into the stormwater, sewer system and / or waterways
- the proper disposal of photographic chemicals
- the recycling and disposal of waste including inks, paper, plates & pallets
- the management of companies by the adoption of cleaner production principles
We use suppliers that are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) & supported by ISO 14001 - the internationally recognised accreditation standard. This process helps reduce the impact of printing on the environment.
How does all this happen?
Our suppliers have organisational objectives to ensure the environment is taken into consideration through all aspects of the printing process. This includes:
- the use of low-emission inks and solutions
- Ink cartons instead of tins
- Implemented improvements in efficiency of operations to reduce waste & chemical use
- Minimisation of energy consumption
- Specification of environmentally friendly paper stocks
It is more than a process; it is a philosophy - the benefits are more than just substitutions of materials & equipment - it is the identification and implementation of an environmental management system across all aspects of the printing process. This philosophy brings a process of environmental and energy accountability.
The benefits to the print process
- Improved efficiency of operations due to reduction in waste & chemical use
- Minimised energy consumption e.g. use of sensor lights, solar energy
- Management of waste - not just waste disposal
- All aspects of the print process is recycled
- A waste management system - a guideline followed that creates consistency & accountability to set standards, fully supported by:
FSC
FSC: FSC is a non-profit, international, independent membership organisation founded in 1993. FSC Certification is recognised as the highest global standard in forest management practices and the Chain of Custody involves the documentation of all steps that track wood from a certified forest to the customer, which creates a sustainability paper trail.
By using the FSC trademark or logo your communications we demonstrate to our customers, shareholders and members that our organisation has taken a position ensuring that the printed material produced has the ability to be traced back to a certified forest of origin.
If you would like more information about this process and use of the FSC logo please contact Gianni Rodino, Direct Marketing and Design Manager at g.rodino@mbs.edu
ISO 14001
Environmental Management System (EMS) as outlined by ISO 14001 provides a structured process for the achievement of continual improvement. ISO 14001 defines an overall environmental management system, closely modelled on the ISO 9000 quality systems standard.
Organisations able to use this logo have demonstrated the establishment of an appropriate environmental policy - documented and communicated to employees & made available to the public, including a commitment to continual improvement and pollution prevention. The EMS is a tool which enables organisations to achieved and systematically control the level of environmental performance that it sets itself.
By using accredited suppliers we will be able to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to the environment through the use of the appropriate logos and the knowledge that the environment has been taken into consideration in all aspects of print production.
