SA Health and Mt Eliza launch new leadership development initiative

Sep, 2008

SA Health and Mt Eliza Executive Education, a part of Melbourne Business School, have launched Health LEADS, a new leadership development initiative to assist SA Health deliver its strategic and operational objectives.

This is the most comprehensive customised leadership development initiative undertaken within the Australian health system. It is a recognition of the important role leadership plays, at all levels, in building a sustainable health system.

Created to compliment the technical excellence of SA Health staff with enhanced leadership skills, the fully customised program is developed in partnership with Mt Eliza to deliver both individual and organisational impact.

Guided by the health reform agenda, and in response to emerging health issues and challenges, this three year initiative will enable all SA Health staff to share, enact and embody a common set of leadership qualities, competencies and behaviours.

"There is some truth in the old adage that good leaders aren't born, they're made, and with this program, we're contributing to the leadership culture of SA Health for generations to come", said Dr Tony Sherbon, Chief Executive, SA Health.

"The value of this program is that from emerging leaders through to executives, Health LEADS has benefits for all," Dr Sherbon said.

Health LEADS is a truly customised program built ‘from scratch,' to SA Health‘s specifications based on Mt Eliza's internationally recognised approach to leadership development. This is in contrast to a tailored program where an education provider modifies one or more of its ‘off the rack' solutions to client needs.

"This program will help SA Health meet its strategic objectives as it has been developed to address the specific and environmental challenges and issues of SA Health," said Prof. Paul S. Kirkbride, Deputy Dean, Mt Eliza Executive Education, Melbourne Business School.

"Our executive education initiative for SA Health is more than just training. It's a strategic tool to assist SA Health execute its strategies through the development of world class leaders," added Prof. Kirkbride.

The foundation of Health LEADS is five core leadership dimensions, called LEADS. These provide a common set of leadership skills, attributes and behaviours for all SA Health staff to embrace. Supporting Health LEADS is a series of customised executive development programs for executives, clinicians and emerging and future leaders.

The first series of programs commence in October 2008.
