Tim Costello's Decent Proposal: 2008 Alumni Dinner
Nov, 2008
The 2008 Annual Alumni Dinner took a timely reflective theme with the backdrop of a world economy in crisis...
Guest speaker Tim Costello's Decent Proposal
The current global financial meltdown is an ethical failure, not a regulatory failure, according to the Reverend Tim Costello.
Speaking at this year's Alumni Dinner Costello likened this ethical dilemma to the film, Indecent Proposal where a wealthy gambler propositions a young wife in need of money to spend one night with him for $1 million.
He warned that if we lose sight of the ethical questions in this financial crisis, we will continue to make the common mistake that ethics are only relevant when the stakes are insignificant, and that people are willing to forget their morality when there is money to be made.
He reminded the 550 alumni, staff and friends of MBS that Wall St in February paid its CEOs $29 billion in bonuses, while total aid to Africa in the last year, where a billion people live in acute poverty, amounted to $27 billion.
An appreciative audience gave him a hearty vote of thanks. Kristine Dery, EMBA 1991, presented World Vision with two scholarships for staff to undertake open enrolment management courses with the school.
